Yesterday's Lunar Eclipse over Chile: Exclusive Photo

Lunar Eclipse Chile

One of the great things about my Canon PowerShot A520 4x optical 14x digital zoom is if you crank it up all the way and point it into the crystal clear Chilean sky you can see that the moon actually has a polar ice cap - who knew? And what's even more exciting is that it appears my camera captured a massive windstorm sweeping across that ice cap, kicking up clouds of snowdust miles into the air. Truly amazing.

Now I know what you're thinking: "Chileno, why don't you publish this in a scientific journal?"

Well, I'm flattered. But I thought you knew. Chileno is a scientific journal.

I'm the photographer because of my steady hand. But if you think, because you love science, that I could use a tripod before the next Chilean lunar eclipse rolls around, I've got one thing to say to you. The clock is ticking so buy me one now.

But seriously don't be all like thisBuy Tripod from Amazonand then expect me to believe you love science. I'm talking featherweight titanium, soundlessly collapsible, highly portable, expensive and preferably with a discreet low-carb whiskey flask enabled. It must exist. Browse around and follow your spirit-animal, you will know when you have encountered the right one because you will buy it for me.

Science thanks you.

UPDATE: Don't be fooled by lunar eclipse impostors from the "northern hemisphere" who would palm off these contrived images of yesterday's lunar eclipse on February 20, 2008 on you. I'm in Chile where it really happened. The ice cap is on the top of the moon. End of story.

Really crap photo...
And you do not need a tripod… you need a decent camera with a decent zoom. I like the sarcasm of the post anyhow. But your photo is utter rubbish, unless is also trying (very, very hard) to be ironic.

I don't try hard to be ironic. Maybe my photo does. My photo isn't as smart as me. I do need a tripod, but also an SLR camera with a decent zoom. If I buy that camera, will you buy me the tripod? By holding out, you got me to up I upped the ante. Well done. Now, though, you really have no excuse not to buy me that tripod. Unless, of course, you don't love science.

You're right, strayone. Eclipses are for girls. Real men like us pimp out our photographic equipment. I will work on it once the tripod you bought for me arrives in the mail.

Chileno,

Your photo is not smart, is blurred and crap, and if you are not being ironic (and also pulling my leg), you are an ignorant idiot, which I think is quite unlikely if you are the same person that wrote the other posts in this blog (sorry if my sense of humour is not as puerile as yours).

Why an SLR?
You will also have to buy a lens. A decent SLR zoom lens would cost you and arm and a leg, and a decent trypod would cost me one of my testicles, a super zoom would do you better, and you can buy the tripod yourself.

Anyhow, considering I do not know you and that if YOU loved science and took it seriously like I do you should know for example, that there is no wind in the moon, I can think of many reasons why I should not buy you any photographic equipment, decent or not.

Cristian:

1. If there's no wind on the moon, then how come the American flag waved when my glorious countrymen landed on the moon!

2. If I didn't made a serious scientific discovery, then why did my photo get published in a Scientific Journal (my blog).

Snap.

Chileno,

1. Your blog is not a scientific journal, is a blog. Science and Nature are scientific Journals.

2. The flags of your country in the moon appear to wave because they have a metal frame, you can see it in this picture. No flag on the moon has ever waved by the action of natural wind, in fact the first of many flags planted by the americans participating in the Apollo programme (the one that the Apollo 11 planted on the moon) fell because of the "wind" caused by the lunar module when taking of.
Apparently all the other flags are still standing up.

If you are still in ironic mode, I find this interchange quite enjoyable. If not however, you have only shown that you are not only ignorant about science but also about historical facts concerning your own country. With americans like you, no wonder the nitwit Bush is in charge of your country!

:)

There's nearly no gravity on the moon, so the flag would have ''floated,'' and if somebody touched it, it would have kept moving, appearing to wave.

well, even with my canon powershot 620 which is surely not much better than yours I took a much better photo of the moon: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8757148@N06/1365045718/
I took that one through a telescope, with the tripod I am not going to buy you. But if you really wanna get serious zoom and an excellent camera:
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18
Actually, I almost wanna "accidentally drop" my Canon Powershot 620 so I have an excuse to upgrade to this compact super zoom baby with a Leica lense, great stability, and tons of wonderfully scrumptious functions... but alas I must stick to my primitive photography techniques...

it's always funny to read the comments of those who actually have the nerve to ask if your are being sarcastic. Sarcasm is way below chileno, the great science and wisdom reporter of the lower hemisphere!
