Colo Colo Wins

Colo Colo Fans

I was hoping for more action in the aftermath of the soccer match but everyone went home quietly after the 2-0 Colo Colo victory over arch-rival Universidad de Chile, who pretty much sucked. U de Chile fans occupied a heavily guarded corner of Estadio Monumental.

Despite a great view of the mountains, the stadium wasn't exactly "monumental". Pinochet possibly didn't actually bankroll it. Directions: the easiest way to get to the Estadio Monumental in Santiago Chile is to take the Metro L1 L5 (Green Line) direction Vicente Valdés and get off at Pedrero.

They should celebrate when Colo Colo wins a Brazuca or Argentine team. When was it the last time they won in the international circuit, 1991?

Or extending MS's comment further...when was the last time anyone in the First World gave a toss about an Argentine team? South American teams are nada mas than cheap-arse feeder clubs for European big-shots. Cheap labour bought at cut-price, er, prices. Sounds familiar in the grand scheme of things?

Anyway, everyone knows, at the very bottom of their hearts, that West Brom is the greatest team on Earth.

disagree, Matt!

a footy fan knows what river plate and boca juniors is. also, it was in the international news, that Lanus is the new champ in argentina.

and poor Messi... has to play in Barcelona, i'm sure he would prefer playing back home than in La Liga and the champions league.

the top 4 leagues (spain, italy, england, germany) buy any player - that knows that balls are round - anyway, no matter if he's from paraguay or denmark or ukrania...

yep, but for every high-profile mega-star south american player in europe there are dozens of cheap imports from brazil, argentina and colombia playing in crappy leagues like russia and the ukraine. It's cheaper for many clubs to buy a south american than to develop or buy a local player.

But none of this really changes the fact that South America is a club footballing backwater in the grand scheme of world football. Brazil and Argentina are two of the best national teams in the world, but their leagues are weak. The best clubs wouldn't stand a chance over a full season in england, spain or italy.

Anyway, i just found ms' comment entertainingly petty so i thought i'd respond in kind :)

Matt, did it come to your mind, that the argentinian and brazilian national team are one of the best in the world, because their players play overseas?

agree with you on most, i but i won't narrow this not only on south american leagues.
what happens, when a team wins the croatian/serbian/bulgarian/swiss/austrian league? right, the top 5 leagues buy all the "star" players. so in the following year those teams have no chance at all to qualify for the champions league to make at least some money. no, the top five league teams instead get richer and richer which widens the gap even more.

this is just how the world goes round. it's not only happening in south america or minor european leagues but also in africa and asia...

Euro football clubs have nothing on South American footie. Take away all the South American players from the top leagues and you're not left with much.

Displaying talent and passion South American clubs have the edge over the European clubs in both the Intercontinental Cup and and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The EPL is supposed to be the best rated league in the world filled with homegrown developed talent. Those same players can't even beat Macedonia playing at home.

Sorry, I noticed a little error. That's Linea 5, not Linea 1
