Chilean Supermarket Employs Pinochet Intelligence Agent to Head Up Security

Santa Isabel is actually the relatively benign grocery store chain in Chile, where checkers complained of having to wear diapers because they weren't allowed bathroom breaks. It's not Lider, where the head of supermarket security is Sergio "Dirty Harry" Díaz López a convicted murderer and agent for Pinochet's ruthless National Information Center CNI, who is applying his Intelligence "know how" to supermarket security, according to La Nación.

Security Guard in Chile

Happy Halloween. To be clear, though, the above-pictured security guard is my friend and has nothing to do with Lider or Dirty Harry. He works at Santa Isabel, where I usually shop, and use to follow me around the entire grocery store, he was quite frightening. Nevertheless, there was something pretty bad-ass about him, and so I took his picture once and, truth be told, he's a very sweet man and I think he was flattered, and ever since then he greets me warmly and doesn't stalk me anymore.

Dirty Harry, who is not my friend, is said to carry a gun with him as he travels from one grocery store to the next, checking up on employees, sometimes in cognito. He knows himself to be a controversial figure, that's the rationale for the gun. His murder sentence was reduced from 10 years to 4, and he meets with a parole officer once a month (leaves gun at home).

Dirty Harry's detractors claim he has absolute freedom to apply military intelligence techniques within the supermarkets. Natalia Duque, President of the Federation of Lider Unions, says "it is known that in many D&S [Lider's holding company] stores they follow people with cameras...mostly union leaders. Also, when the workers unionize, they are called in for extended questioning where they are made to say who they vote for, etc."

Taking tips from a military manual, Dirty Harry sets workers on other workers, who feel obliged to carry out such sick tasks because if they don't, well, it's fucking Dirty Harry are you crazy! Many interviewed chose to remain anonymous. It's an intelligence system set up to maintain fear and mistrust among the workers, says La Nación.

In one of the stores, two coworkers were caught kissing on videotape (and btw, Chile is hilarious in this way: everywhere you go - pharmacies, supermarkets - there's overt flirtation and grabass between coworkers) but anyway they were caught on videotape and the security guards showed the video to the entire workforce, with the intention of humiliating them. Just another way to break them down.

And me, to venture that those who scandalized poor, but Wena, Naty might get punished. When such techniques are institutionalized under the direction of a security who can't even get punished properly for a murder conviction. In addition to killing a communist party member Luis Rivera Matus in November, 1975, there are several human rights cases against Dirty Harry. Yet his sentence was reduced to 4 years and he's got a job terrorizing workers, doing his small part to continue Pinochet's legacy of neoliberalism from the barrel of a gun, after 18 years of this "socialist government", this "Democracy".

Apropo to the topic of supermarkets benefiting from the obliteration of labor organization, the Chilean Government is doing its big part by not reversing Pinochet's 1980 constitution, which criminalizes organization between "distinct" companies (and so with some easy paperwork, each Lider is a distinct store. In Chile, 2007, employees from two different Lider stores cannot legally unionize or strike together).

Good news though: Lider was rated among Top 35 Great Places to Work in Chile, thanks to its working environment.

Dirty Harry's interrogation methods are taken straight from the army manual, and include focusing a lamp in the face of the person being questioned, making sure the person employee feels guilty at all times.

You know, the list goes on, and it's really hard to choose what not to bring out from this fascinating article, so if you can read Spanish, seriously take a minute and read it in its entirety it's fucking fascinating. If you don't speak Spanish quickly learn Spanish for free online or plug the article into translate.google.com and see what happens.

I think I know who I'm gonna be for Halloween. Although it's too bad Pinochet's military dictatorship didn't take place in an English speaking country because his obvious nickname would be Scary Harry. I mean, right...?

Question numero uno. Do you really think that's hilarious?
Question numero dos. Why is just Chile hilarious in that way? I've had the same problems in the U.S. more times than I care to count.

No, I was lying. I don't think it's funny. You're right, PDA by mutual consent is a serious problem and we need to crack down on it on a global level. If only we could get Dirty Harry off of parole, send him to the USA to whip those workers into shape.

Really good post, today.
Do you know why this kind of thing doesn't get more coverage from El Mercurio or one of the other "major" papers? Count D&S ads in them...

Also, the practice of running the stores as separate from one another to avoid unionising goes one step further: many of the stores functions are run by separate subcontractors which belong to D&S, so cashiers, cleaning staff, and people putting items on shelves are all likely to work for different companies.

But at least the staff have chilean flags on their uniforms... because D&S is really something for Chile to be proud of. It's so modern and shiny...

Scary stuff, though not entirely surprising - Lider are not great from a client's point of view either. We have one round the corner from us, though we don't buy much there that does not come in a packet. My wife noticed that first the fish had eyes a bit glazed over, then the next day they would all be headless... not to mention the liberal use of deodorant to disguise the smell. Another own-goal, in my opinion, was the decision to remove the in-store bakeries from all but the largest Lider stores. Now they just sell pre-heated bread that is pretty bad. I wrote to them about this via their suggestions box, months ago, to which I have had no reply. The positive consequence of this pretty shoddy attitude to their clients is that we have started to walk further afield to local bakeries that make delicious bread fresh every day. It has really opened our eyes to other, smaller local shops.

It's common practice in Chile not throw out old meat, but to douse it in bleach, spray it down with deodorant and stick it back on the shelves.

I'm serious.

Agro-Super, the parent company for Super Pollo and Super Cerdo, has been implicated in this practice when shipping out meat, also Uni-mart, apparently it was a big scandal with them recently. Most all grocery stores I go to often smell fucking rank in the meat department. It's not just me I've heard local Chileans warn their little siblings to stay clear of the fish dept.

The small-time operations like open air markets...Well, I'm sure there are some bad apples but I've bought fish often from the open air markets and it's fresh, clean, delicious. I am MUCH more confident in that, than going to a big supermarket.

Also, everything's cheaper at the open air markets, and you're not supporting these fucking diabolical grocery stores who bleach your meat, interrogate employees with lamps pointed at their faces, and employ convicted murderers to head up security.

The open air markets are easy to find. So ditch Lider and everything, go farmer's market. (I know, I should walk the walk, I will soon and I did so when one was closer to where I lived).

Damn it..and i was just about to post how great Lider was because the one in Vina now sells real organic stuff from Safeway (the US version)...organic pasta sauces, organic ketchup, organic maple syrup and other organic goodies. If i can't shop in Lider, where the hell am i going to get these goods??? Can i justify supporting torture and unfair workplace practices just so i can avoid a few chemicals?

There's nothing inherently "conscious" about organic food. I met a cuica woman at a pro-Pinochet rally who went off about her organic farm outside of Santiago.

Safeway came from England but it's pretty mainstream and corporate in the US, their "organic" products would be scoffed at by any self-respecting 9x carbon filtrated drinking water tye-died in the wool hippie, or yoga-ersize LA yuppie. Whole Foods is where it's at if you're in the right tax bracket. Not that I'm celebrating those hippy/yuppy cultures but at least you can trust them to know a thing or two about what they're ingesting (Mr. Hanky be damned).

Check out this review of Safeway's "Organic" products.

I can't speak for the organic-ness of the Chilean open air markets but it's fresher and cheaper than what the supermarkets are hawking, and any meat-bleaching going on there would smell up the whole street.

Back to your Safeway-worshipping, they're super lame management, but even so that's N. American standards if Chile's supermarkets could, in addition to fake-organic products, get like a hundredth of the pay, benefits, and working conditions that N. American Safeway workers enjoy, then that'd be progress.

quite a good review based on the comments...

the produce in the markets here is fresh but it certainly isn't organic...chilean farmers are obsessed with spraying everything with as many chemicals as possible. organic farming is slowly catching on here but unfortunately, what's produced is mostly exported. there's very little to buy in chile...and what there is is normally more expensive than it would be in the US or Europe (chilean goods).

the mass-produced battery chicken here is disgusting and is far and away the worst chicken i've had the misfortune to eat anywhere in the world. free range chicken here is absurdly expensive- 5000-6000 per kilo of thigh meat. with the skin on. best to stick to vacuum packed argentine beef.

Two reasons why this statement is completely worthless:

1. I don't trust blog commenters.
2. I didn't see any peace symbols or marijuana leaves emblazoned next to the commenters' names. How can they credibly speak about organic goods?

I'm sorry Matt, but you're just gonna have to step down on this one.

Wait, shit, I'm remembering now that a mega-Lider near my house sells merquén, sugar and chocolate powder in bulk just like those hippy stores.

Fuck, I'm torn.

Man, why can't there be Torture-Free chocolate powder?

I was happy to learn that the local Lola's mexican supermarket back in my hood in SR, CA together the Mekong market (can't recall the name) beat the corporate competition Albertson's (similar to Safeway) out of the neighborhood. The ironic thing is that the Mekong market is where 20 years ago we used to buy fresh produce at the "fruit stand" which quickly went out of business due to the Food 4 Less gigantic food warehouse up Sebastopol road. So, small businesses can soemtimes win with the right products. I guess they have very little organic products, but the produce is much fresher!!! Will, maybe you could interview the employees about the terrorism tactics used at their stores. Post their anonymous interviews...

Nice to hear from you, General! How'd you know I was so handsome? I've been contemplating placing a deposit in my readers' spank bank but, sadly, the thought of an old cadaver like you makes me less inclined to do so. Keep reading, though: someday it might just happen.
