Chile From Within - Blog Review

This is my review of Tomás' blog, Chile From Within

Probably one of the best Chile blogs in existence. Tomás Dinges, simultaneously a North American and Chilean, former reporter for the famed 7más7 and Miami Herald among others, uses multi-subject, visceral anecdotes to precisely analyze Chilean culture in a sensitive, empathetic and powerful indictment of his country's shortcomings, and a celebration of its fruits. His writing is not simplistic, but it is imbued with love and affection for Chile, its people and places. Self-described as a failure in his self-imposed "Cultural Change in Chile" beat, Tomás is nothing of the sort, imho. Sure, individual posts of late do slip into paragraphs of sighs that verge on soft-core porn and his latest, surfing in Chile, a fluff piece for cuicos filed from abroad, aren't representative of him at his best. Just bite your lip and keep on reading. Despite current attendance of Columbia University in New York, he keeps writing, and it's getting better since he added yours truly to his sentimental yet nevertheless evocative list of Chile memories. Recommended posts include his haircut piece and his reporting of Pinochet's Death. Overall, his observations will undoubtedly be lasting, and outlive most other jackasses I review here.

That said, what do you think about Chile From Within? Write your own review in the comments below!

I enjoy reading both Thomas D. and your blog, as a sort of yin & yang of Chilean viewpoints (though I know that occasionally you two overlap ever so slightly.)

My interest in Chile is minor, as my son spent a semester there as an exchange student. While he was away, getting *any* news or views from that region was a way for me to be connected. As anyone familiar with exchange students knows, girls keep too much in tough, and boys... well, you never hear from them unless shit has hit the fan. So any news from Chile was interesting for me.

While he was not in Santiago (he was in Copiapo) I enjoyed the two viewpoints of Chile and its capital from you and Thomas. It allowed me to gain a glimpse of the culture my son was experiencing first-hand. He is back now, but I've not deleted your (or Thomas') RSS feed... you have both kept me interested.

My son has expressed a desire to return to Chile to visit next year, and I'm considering going with him, so I'll likely keep reading. Keep up the good work.
