Privileged Pics
Class warrior that I am, I sneaked into this gated community, jogged up the mountain and I finally found that sick view of Santiago, careful what you wish for.

It does kinda look like a foggy wintry haze, but it didn't reflect God's wishes for the day, there really was not a cloud in the sky, rather twas a bright and crisp wintry landscape, from where I stood at least:

So let's pull back a bit for some cultural context.

Ouch. And that's after rain and snow. Cool mountain though:
I never realized it was that dramatically volcanic, it'd probably make for a good day hike if I knew what it was called. Snow's melting rapidly, but here's a quick look back at the Andes:

Whats up with these photos...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6940544.stm
Is this for real???
Now, all the little brown and less brown people get to see snow, not just the whities.
The gold Labrador is so cute!
So I'm curious as to the impact of the unusual snowfall on Transantiago. Were they prepared with trucks to salt the roads? Skis to hand out to the masses?
Can't find it online but in Sunday's El Mercurio there's a picture of former presidential candidate Joaquín Lavín (UDI, Pinochet's party) playing in the snow. A few years back when he was more aggressively populist he brought snow down to the valley "for the poor". Teaching poor people to ski. In Chile, ski is an expensive, elitist sport that only the upper crust can afford, it's like POLO in the US. I think his theatrics flopped and the snow melted. Maybe I'm making that part up. Either way, he looks really happy in today's picture.
In the meantime a bunch of crops got frozen over and the roofs of the shanty town near my house caved in. A lot of accidents, a lot of neck-less snowmen. Basically, the snow was something Chileans were totally unprepared for.
Will :D
Upper-crust Chileans just like their fellow neighbors, the Argies also play polo, ski, tennis, rugby, cricket and every other Patrician sport you can think of. One of the reasons why Ralph Lauren (the arbiter of all things Old-Money and Waspie) decided to gold-mine the local idiosincracies by opening stores in Buenos Aires and Santiago. Now if we could only get Abercrombie & Finch to open in Santiago it would be the icing on the cake. Could you imagine how popular it would be in Chile with all the fetishistic "All-American" advertising. If you think Falabella is bad, well it's United Colors of Benetton compared to A&F. :P
p.s.
Japanese teens are salivating for the up-coming launch of Abercrombie flagship store in Ginza.
