Surprise! VTR Sucks Too
VTR is the only telecommunications company in Chile besides Telefónica. In addition to phone and cable service, they are a provider of internet broadband access. In Spanish, broadband is banda ancha. VTR Banda Ancha está increiblemente pésimo. Banda Ancha provided by VTR Sucks.
VTR is a monopoly. But if there are two telecommunications companies in Chile, how can you call that a monopoly? Well, I'm not sure you can. Maybe it's part of a duopoly. Or oligopoly.
But you know I think VTR is a monopoly. I mean, if there's only one internet access provider for an address -- no matter where I am in Chile I will never have a choice between two internet access providers -- then that's a monopoly, isn't it?
No matter how you define it, VTR sucks; they're already causing problems. I moved, and need to contract the services of an internet service provider in my new place. Like Telefónica Chile, it looks like VTR is going to take about a month to install my service. Let's start counting.
VTR advertises installation within 48-72 hours of signing the contract. Now, however, they're saying it's 10 days. Why? A special promotion and they're swamped. Great way to anticipate a surge in business, guys.
Anyway, just a few minutes ago I got some bad news. Big fucking surprise. Since my landlord has a debt from 1997 for a hundred bucks, so they're going to charge us 40 bucks more for installation (for which they're already charging 20 bucks) so approximately $60 USD total. Landlord's cool and they'll discount that from rent, no prob. But now I have to travel to VTR's office, re-sign the contract and hit the clock again. 10 days from TODAY, despite the fact that I signed the contract like 5 days ago.
Telecommunications in Chile are a dump. Whoever says "Chile is on its way up" is talking through his ass. If you can point to a serious trust-busting effort among elected officials, then I take it back. Until then, I'll maintain that you're completely detached from reality if you consider that telecommunications in Chile are good.
Anything you'd like to add, Pato?

Yeah I know what you mean! I can relate to your fustration!
Actually at my wife's house in Las Condes we do have a choice between VTR and Telefonica for internet. Telefonica is DSL and VTR is cable I believe. It's true they both suck compared to US companies but VTR is vastly superior to Telefonica. I am very sorry for you, I know what it's like dealing with those people. Try to find an apartment that has VTR!
True, Telefonica does have sort of a monopoly on the telecomunications industry. In my last trip to Chile I ended up buying like some 40 dollar pre-pago mobile from Claro, ah those Spaniards are stealing once again. Just in a new way. (((sigh)))
