God Dies. You Vote.

While I was busy decimating Tomás and Pato in heavily produced lucha libre contests last week, God was getting his ass kicked by Niles Atallah.

More accurately, a clay-mation cowboy directed by Niles, who beats God down and rips a television out of His stomach on a spaghetti western film set. Not only does He bleed, but the TELEVISION bleeds static it's fucking awesome. All this to the catchy jangling sound and ironic lyrics of Los Tres, Chile's biggest rock band which recently got back together and gave Niles the contract for the music video of their latest hit song Hágalo Usted Mismo.

Here's where you come in: Go check out the video, enjoy it, and VOTE for it. On the right hand column click the button that says, "Los Tres - Hágalo Usted Mismo". VOTE NOW!!!

You don't have to register, and it'll take about three seconds of your time to vote, after thoroughly enjoying the 4-minute video. The best part, however, is that YOU will be doing your small part to undo the Catholic Church's stranglehold on Chilean culture.

You see, Niles' involvement with Los Tres is not without controversy. When Los Tres performed at the world-famous Viña del Mar festival back in February, Niles did the video installation which got censored by the Catholic owned Canal 13. Why? Lines like "On the 8th Day, God Created the Morning After Pill" and other diabolically pro-choice messages.

I watched the festival on TV but of course the video didn't show up. It was an ugly fight that made the headlines in Santiago for several days, and showed the brutal and corrupt underbelly of Chilean media.

This is a country where 95% of Catholics believe that condoms should be publicly distributed in order to prevent the spread of AIDS, but the Catholic Church consistently opposes public health campaigns and runs alternative propaganda every time the government makes a feeble effort to promote safe sex.

The video competition is being judged, in part, by conservative producers from Canal 13 who aren't really into God getting creamed. But there's not much they can do if everyone votes for Niles' video. Ha!

So vote now for the claymation cowboy kicking God's Ass!!!

Of course you should check out all of the other videos and decide which one you like the best, especially Niles' other video called Más, music by a super-cool Santiago group called Bobo. It's got a much more experimental feel, both the music and the video, very much worth your while.

So once again, go vote for your favorite video. I humbly recommend you vote for Niles' video. Go to the right side of the page, click on Los Tres - Hágalo Usted Mismo, then click "Votar" (means "vote" in Spanish). So to votar, go here:

VOTED !
Hey - and at MY age, that takes some nerve! God's gonna get me - a devout (*gags*) former altar-boy from Quebec - which is (well, was) far more catholic than Chile.

But the 'gente' there trained the priests/bishops to 'shut-the-fuck-up' on all things located below the belt-line. "You no play da game, you no make da rules, tabarnac' "

And, as you say, 95% of Chileans (mostly nominal catholics)believe that condoms are both OK - and, more importantly, necessary. If we are to keep our kids from dying.

Which brings to mind an interesting story - about an after-dinner discussion I had with three Holy Cross priests at St. Georges College. One of them was Father Gerry Whelan (Father 'McEnroe' in the movie "Machuca" - a film you MUST see) - long retired by the 90's.

It was when AIDS was rather new ... and there was a lot of coverage about an American kid (Ricky Ray)who was dying of AIDS - he was about 15 and was infected by bad blood for his hemophilia. The guys at St. Georges watched TV coverage about Clinton's invitation to have Ricky attend his Inauguration. There followed a heated discussion about whether St. Georges should have condom machines installed in the high-school lavatories. I'm not sure what they did about it, but all three priests agreed that they should be installed - especially Fr. Whelan. If you've seen 'Machuca', you'll understand that Whelan liked taking on the 'barrio alto' and the Church hierarchy.

So, the church has many faces - including the blind and ignorant ones you point to. But, my time at Hogar Santa Cruz in Penalolen in the 90's showed other faces too. Chicago's Brother Donald Kuchenmeister, who ran the hogar for 30 abandoned kids for 15 years - is still at it, though now retired - feeding poor & sick old people at St. Roche's.

Now, if we could just drown the bastard-Bishops ....

Niles and Will ~

I just watched your brilliant and moving “Memoria Desierta” … and will show it later this week to Adam Policzer - a former prisoner at Chacabuco, who lives here in Vancouver. I will write to you about Adam’s and his friends’ reactions - which will be somewhat like Rolando Carrasco’s and Santiago Cavieres’. A smile; a tear.

Certainly Roberto Saldivar and Pedro Barreda must be delighted and moved by the fact that their great life’s-work has been recorded and circulated with such feeling - and art. The artistry of the whole production - with brilliant views through doorways and windows - is remarkable. The colours, the textures, the silence, the traces of other times … all amplify a brilliant production. Congratulations.

And thank you …

Canal 13 also got the tom jones impersonator who performed live the morning the man himself to change the words in 'Sex Bomb' so it didn't sound as disgustingly, horrifyingly, lock your daughters up filthy as the original version.

Thanks for voting Tom!

Also thanks for sharing your balanced view of the Church in Chile: you've worked directly with it and know they're not all tyrants, there are good folks there too. Amazing to think that in the mid-80's there was heated debate about condom machines at a Catholic school.

Of course, in the context of classism, we all know that Chile's poor people tend get the brunt of conservative policy while the rich will always find a workaround, even when it comes to abortion which is illegal in Chile.

Actually, it was 1992 - around the Clinton Inauguration time. But amazing, yes.

I hope you've seen or will see 'Machuca' ... a different time, a different Chile. 'Machuca' won the Best Foreign Piture at several festivals, including the 2004 Vancouver International Film Festival (and Philidelphia, Mexico, Valdivia, Lima ... )

It was fascinating to see a film about a man I knew - Gerry was a great American - who loved Chile despite some terrible times.

Why do they keep playing that "Sex Bomb" song all the time in Chile? As much as Tom Jones is talented and iconic, he is what they call a "has been" and well passed his better days.
